Harvest Fare

Autumnal ingredients for cosy cuisine.

Foodies rejoice. For fall brings with it — not only the chill which sharpens the appetite — but a bounty of ripe new ingredients to savour and delight in. A new season: of squashes, figs, and (of course) pumpkins — for the jug as much as the jack o’ lantern. The Royal Exchange’s extensive collection of luxury eateries are making the most of this harvest month. Check out our pick of their mouth-watering offerings.

This season’s centrepiece has to be the return of the famous Sunday Roast served up by our award-winning outfit The Libertine. Here, in the historic vaults beneath the Exchange (where once world trade’s luxuries were stored), you’ll enjoy a feast of epic proportions — prepared with meat from quality butchers, locally sourced seasonal vegetables, fluffy Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes and topped with lashings of rich gravy. And, for a real slice of harvest time, why not try the restaurant’s Roasted Butternut Squash Wellington: with squash, savoy cabbage, beetroot and mushroom duxelles in golden pastry — served with seasonal greens, heritage carrots and parsnip puree.

Upstairs at Fortnum and Mason’s Bar and Restaurant you can enjoy a Roast Squash Salad with Harissa Hummus and Picked Red Onion, while on the first-floor mezzanine, grab one of Engel’s famous hot dogs — which come prepared with exceptional season-perfect garnishes: truffle mayonnaise, melted Gruyère and fig jam. Just across the floor is Korean fine-dining establishment Jang, where you can sample Chef Dana’s autumnal array of elevated ingredients: steamed turbot, celeriac skewers, Korean barbecued wagyu steak and duck breasts, a new Hamachi Tartare, black truffle-laced corn noodles — and King Crab.

Finished and feasted, why not take home a bottle of red from Oeno House to warm you up as the nights draw in? Speaking of which — a special mention to an exceptional offer from The Libertine that we can’t get enough of: the magnificent pairing that is Oysters and Guinness. Indulge in this iconic duo from Monday to Friday between 3pm-5pm, where you can get two oysters and a pint of the black stuff (or glass of Rathfinny English Sparkling wine) for just a tenner.
