Ever since Audrey Hepburn first stepped out wearing a pair of ballet slippers in the American musical film Funny Face, flat shoes have become synonymous with elegance, grace, and sophistication. Three words that could just as easily describe the style icon and businesswoman Olivia Palermo, who has partnered with Pretty Ballerinas to curate a capsule collection of ‘eight shoes for eight different moments’.
From embroidered mules to tasselled loafers – and even a pair of lace sneakers – Palermo has picked the designs to work with different facets of her jet-setting lifestyle. Whether that’s a trip to the gym or an appearance on the red carpet, there’s a footwear option for every occasion. What’s more, there are colourful clutches and mini shoulder bags too, so it’s easy to mix or match your accessories with your shoes.
Of course, no collaboration with Pretty Ballerinas would be complete without a nod to its best-selling style: the Rosario ballerina flat with a rounded toe and a thick cord bow. A personal favourite of Palermo’s, the leopard print version with a red trim is set to become a glamorous staple for summer 2018.
This year is a special one for Pretty Ballerinas as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Mascaró family making ballet slippers by hand on the island of Menorca. The company keeps an archive of its shoes to preserve techniques and special designs, and some shapes from the 1960s are still in use. To this day, all of the design and manufacturing for the brand is still done in Ferreries – sometimes, by the sons, daughters and grandchildren of the craftsmen and women that began working with Pedro and Jaime Mascaró way back in 1918.
